RESVERATROL

A polyphenol that can be found in plants such Japanese knotweed (Itatori tea) and fruits such as red grapes, blueberries, blackberries and even peanuts. Resveratrol gained much of it’s popularity in the 1990’a through the French paradox where it was observed that people who drank lot’s of red wine seemed to have some type of protection against some diseases. (Red wine id NOT a cure for diseases in case you are already off to grab a bottle) But resveratrol, which is contained in red wine has been shown to show noticeable health benefits;

  • Activates Telomere activity

  • Reduces unwanted DNA mutations

  • Enhances DNA repair mechanism

  • Activates Sirtuins

  • Free radical scavenger

  • Increases internal antioxidant defenses

  • Reduces TNF (Tumor Necrosis Factor).Reduces C-reactive protein and Cuclooxygenase-1

  • Stimulates stem cells

PTEROSTILBENE

Also referred to more potent version of resveratrol, Pterostilbene has appears to have a better bioavailability than it’s counterpart. Some studies show that it have 4 times the bioavailability . The compound can be found in plants such at Pterocarpus marsupium heartwood, red sandal wood and perhaps the most popiular and prevalent source would be blueberries.

Free radical scavenger

Activates Sirtuins

Activates AMP kinase

Increases internal antioxidant defenses

Enhances DNA repair

Increases autophagy

ALOE VERA

One of my father’s favorite plants! From a young age I kept hearing about the virtues of Aloevera, much before the internet made thousands of studies easily available. Aloe vera contains hundreds ob different biologically active compounds from amino acids to antibacxterial enzimes, saponins, hormones, vitamins, steroids, salicylic acid, polysaccharides, aloetic acid and much more.

Although it is often associated with skin care, Aloe Vera does MUCH more:

Contains several antioxidants that will protect our cells

Benefits the immune system

  • inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase

  • Reduces Histamine release

  • Reduces prostaglandin E2 production

  • Stimulates certain immune cells

  • Reduces inflammation through the breakdown of bradykinin

  • Great for skin, burns and wounds

  • Enhances collagen and elastin production through the stimulation of fibroblasts

*Can act as a laxative if large quantities are taken

ASTAXANTHIN

Primarily produced by Haematococcus Pluvialis when the proper conditions are present (cell under stress from the environment). The red substance produced by this cell becomes part of the food cvhain and is responsible for the red colour we see in flamingos’ salmon, crabs, lobsters and shrimp and more…

  • Very powerful free radical scavenger

  • Increases internal antioxidant defenses

  • Inhibits ROS( reactive oxygen species)

  • Reduced NF-kb which doen regulated TNF-a, IL-1b and IL -6 . Thus reducing inflammation.

  • Inhibits COCX-2 (cyclooxygenase), prostaglandin E2 and CV-Reactive protein.

  • Has been show to protect against sunburn

  • Improve vision in middle aged subjects

  • Reduction of crows feet, increased elsayticity of the skin,

  • Protects against excessive free radical production due to exercise.

  • Increase in exercise capacity

NAD

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is produced by our bodies through a complex mechanism involving the amino acid tryptophan. What is critical to understand about NAD is that is an essential component of cellular activity and electron transport chain. Other areas where NAD comes to the rescue include:

  • DNA repair: The molecule will get brocken down and used as repair parts for our DNA

  • Helps the sirtuins

  • Helps in cellular communication

  • Critical for the functioning of the mitochondria

  • Prevents hearing loss

  • Increases energy

A side not on Nicotinamide is that supplementing with this increases methylation. One should be cautious to not deplete precious methyl groups and essentially ‘’pee out’’ this supplement. Methyl groups are critical for the normal functioning of creatine and dopamine so we should ensure that these are protected/spared. If one were to take over 1000mg of NR, creatine systhesis could decrease by as much as 25%.

To make sure that NR is not being heavily methylated and that most of it be converted to NAD, one should

  1. Take with meals

  2. spread it evenly amongst several meals

  3. Assuming we are losing some methylgroups, take TMG (trimethylglycine) in a ratio of 1:2 . Meaning that for every 200mg of NR, take 100mg of TMG

The unfortunate part of NAD is that as we age we produce less of it, which then accelerates aging. So at a time where we would need a boost of NAD to counteract damage, we have less available. So logically, replenishing nicotinamide shortages would make great sense in an antiaging strategy. From what I have found, there are several form of Nicotinamide with the most effective being Nicotinamide Riboside which can easily be converted in to NAD.

CURCUMIN

One of the most power full medicinal herbs we are blessed to have! Simply put, if Aloe Vera was my father’s favourite, Curcumin (found in Turmeric) in mine. With inflammation being center point to so many chronic illnesses, one should get familiar with what I believe to be the most powerful NATURAL anti-inflammatory at our disposal. Turmeric and curcumin perform it’s antiinflamatory magic by blocking NF-kb and TNF-a

Asides from being the anti-inflammatory king/Queen, curcumin also has the following benefits

  • Protects against DNA damage

  • Free radical scavenger

  • Protects against oxidative stress by being both an antioxidant and stimulating the body’s own antioxidant defenses such catalase , superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GP-x), glutathione reductase (GR), heme oxigenase-1 (OH-1), glutathione transferse (GST)

  • Stimulates AMP Kinase

CARNOSINE

This dipeptide is present in our muscles and can be obtained by eating meats such as chicken, tuna, and turkey. Unfairly, men tend to have higher levels of carnosine but these levels rapidly decline with age.

  • Helps with oxidative stress

  • Stimulates our body’s own antioxidant defense mechanism

  • Prevents the glycosylation of proteins

  • Prevents the formation of AGE products

  • Prevents protein cross linking of proteins

  • Protects against presbyopia and cataract when taken in eyedrop form.

  • Great for the skin

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID

This antioxidant is naturally occurring in our bodies and is also found when we consume foods such red meats and organ meats. It can also be found is lower concentration in veggies such as tomatoes, spinach and broccoli .

ALA shines in the following categories:

  • Can protect telomere length

  • Super antioxidant

  • Free radical scavenger

  • Protects the mitochondria

  • Inhibits NF-kb

  • Aids in liver and nerve cell damage

APIGENIN

SULFORAPHANE

QUERCITIN

EGCG

As the most famous molecule in green tea, EGCG has been consumed for thousands of years and has a long list of scientific studies to support it’s claims. Not to be confused with fermeted black teas or semi-fermented teas such as Oolong, green tea which comes from the camellia sinensis plant has benefits that far outweigh other forms of tea

  • Protects against DNA mutations and damage

  • Protects against free radical damage

  • Stimulates our bodies own anti-oxidant defense

  • Stimulates AMP Kinase

  • Helps with autophagy

  • Reduces TNF-a and C-reactive protein.

Used in Chinese medicine for over 2000 years, astragalus is traditionally used to increase ‘’Qui’’- energy, lifeforce, stamina, and guard against stress.

  • Guards against DNA damage and protects Telomeres

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Inhibits TNF-a which then down regulates NFK-b

  • Improves Neuron growth through of its main compounds called Astragaloside IV

If you hear of a product called TAM-65, it is derived from cycloastrogenol found in astragalus.

CISTANCHE DESERTICOLA

Native to China and Mongolia, this parasitic holoparasitic plant gets its nutrients from other plants. With over 2000 years or recorded usage, this plant has primarily been used for restoring energy, vitality and youth.

Recently , many studies have triend to better understand how this plant fiunctions and the results are quite impressive. Here are some of the main areas whereCistanche can be of benefit:

  • Increase in telomeres activity

  • Antiooxidant and free radical scavenger

  • Increases the activity of SOD

  • Increases the speed of DNS repair

  • Stimulates the immune system (T cells and NK cells, macrophage)
